She was one of the new bevy of Russian beauties to hit the tennis scene and she started with such promise. Olga Poutchkova was born on September 27th 1987 in Moscow but now lives in America where she models for Elite Model Management. Coached by her father Alex she was the World Number 1 Junior in the ITF Under 12 rankings and in the Eddie Herr competition that year she beat Shahar Peer in the Final of the Under 12s. She made her debut on the Under 18 circuit on August 13th 2000 in the USTA Junior International Grass Court Championships but was beaten in the first round. A week later at the USTA Under 18 Junior International Hard Court Championships she had her first win in the Under 18 doubles, playing with Brazilian Caroline Neves. In 2003 she won the Under 18 Junior Singles Title in the Junior International Hard Court Championships beating Jessi Robinson in the Final. Poutchkova started her ITF professional career in March 2002 and played four tournaments in Australia. She reached the quarter finals at Warrnambool and Benalie. In 2003 she reached the final in Miami in January and the semi-final in Houston in June. She won her first WTA professional tournament in Baltimore in January 2003. She made her WYA main draw debut in Hobart in 2006 but lost in the qualifying for the Australian Open. She also failed to qualify for both the French Open at Roland Garros and Wimbledon that year but she won through qualifying to make the main draw of the US Open. She was beaten by Marion Bartoli in the first round. Her form started to improve and she reached her first WTA Tour Final in Kolkale, India in September 2006 beating 7th seed Nicola Pratt but lost to Martina Hingis in the final. She reached her 2nd WTA Tour Final in Quebec City but lost again to Marion Bartoli 6-0/6-0. She was the first woman to lose without winning a game in a tour final since 1993 but incurred an injury during the final. In 2006 she made her Top 10 debut in 2006 and reached her highest ranking of 32 in the world on June 17th 2007. But the life of a top tennis professional is precarious and she was unable to keep up the momentum and her ranking plummeted. She ended 2007 with a world ranking of 226. 2010 did not start much better. She concentrated on playing $25,000 tournaments to try and bring her ranking up but she lost in the second round of the first two she played and the first round of the third. In March 2010 she rallied a bit and won two of these tournaments in a row, but in 2011 she has dropped further. As of January 17th she is currently ranked 373 in the world. |
